3D Organisation of Cells in Pseudostratified Epithelia

چکیده

Pseudostratified epithelia have smooth apical and basal surfaces, yet along the apical-basal axis, cells assume highly irregular shapes, which we introduce as punakoids. They interact dynamically with many more than visible at surface. Here, review a recently developed new perspective on epithelial cell organisation. Seemingly random first sight, packing configurations entire axis follow fundamental geometrical relationships, minimise lateral cell-cell contact energy for given cross-sectional area variability. The complex 3D neighbour relationships in pseudostratified thus emerge from simple physical principle. This paves way development of data-driven simulation frameworks that will be invaluable dynamics disease.

Transepithelial Projections from Basal Cells Are Luminal Sensors in Pseudostratified Epithelia

Basal cells are by definition located on the basolateral side of several epithelia, and they have never been observed reaching the lumen. Using high-resolution 3D confocal imaging, we report that basal cells extend long and slender cytoplasmic projections that not only reach toward the lumen but can cross the tight junction barrier in some epithelia of the male reproductive and respiratory trac...

Interkinetic Nuclear Migration Is a Broadly Conserved Feature of Cell Division in Pseudostratified Epithelia

Animal development requires tight integration between the processes of proliferative growth and epithelial morphogenesis, both of which play out at the level of individual cells. In this respect, not only must polarized epithelial cells assume complex morphologies, these distinct forms must be radically and repeatedly transformed to permit mitosis. A dramatic illustration of this integration be...

Heterogeneity, Cell Biology and Tissue Mechanics of Pseudostratified Epithelia: Coordination of Cell Divisions and Growth in Tightly Packed Tissues.

Pseudostratified epithelia (PSE) are tightly packed proliferative tissues that are important precursors of the development of diverse organs in a plethora of species, invertebrate and vertebrate. PSE consist of elongated epithelial cells that are attached to the apical and basal side of the tissue. The nuclei of these cells undergo interkinetic nuclear migration (IKNM) which leads to all mitoti...

Stem cells in prostatic epithelia.

The normal prostate is, structurally and functionally, a highly complex glandular tissue in which populations of epithelial and stromal cells interact, one with the other, and are under a constant state of proliferation, differentiation, elimination and selective secondary replenishment so that functional integrity of the tissue is maintained. The ability of normal prostatic tissue to maintain ...

Stem cells in breast epithelia.

The rodent and human nonpregnant mammary glands contain epithelial, intermediate and myoepithelial cells which have all been isolated as cell lines in vitro. Transforming growth factor-alpha (TGF alpha) and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) are produced by myoepithelial cells and can stimulate the growth of intermediate stem cells in vitro. Epithelial and intermediate cells behave like stem...
